Record #202900:

Ice sampling and basic sea ice core analysis / Hajo Eicken.

Title: Ice sampling and basic sea ice core analysis / Hajo Eicken.
Author(s): Eicken, Hajo.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Fairbanks, AK: University of Alaska
In: Field techniques for sea ice research. (2009.),
Abstract: Outlines history of sea ice sampling, from traditional use of ice tester by hunters, through systematic sampling and measurement by Malmgren during Amundsen's 1922-25 Norwegian North Polar Expedition, to modern use of icebreakers and multidisciplinary research. Discusses in detail: sampling (site selection, ice coring and slab cutting); ice-core analysis (stratigraphic analysis, thick and thin sections, sea ice state variables temperature, salinity, and density, and deriving brine and air volume fractions from state variables). Describes case studies: sampling and stratigraphy of multiyear ice (eastern Chukchi Sea off coast of Northern Alaska); and identification of annual layers and dating of sea ice cores (northern Barents Sea)
