Record #202898:

Field techniques for snow observations on sea ice / Matthew Sturm.

Title: Field techniques for snow observations on sea ice / Matthew Sturm.
Author(s): Sturm, Matthew.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Fairbanks, AK: University of Alaska
In: Field techniques for sea ice research. (2009.),
Abstract: Establishes importance of snow that covers Arctic sea ice from September to June, and lists "snow on sea-ice" services arranged by coastal communities, stakeholders in marine transportation, oil and gas exploitation, and tourism, and public interests. Describes development of sea ice snow cover; basic snow cover observations; snow pit measurements; snow traverse measurements (snow depth and snow-covered area, e.g.); and analysis of snow pit and traverse data. Emphasizes heterogeneity and layered structure of snow cover, and difficulties of measuring thermal, optical, or dielectric properties that are often of interest, of sampling sufficiently more easily measured properties such as layer thickness, density, grain shape and size, and temperature, and of differentiating snow cover from sea ice in remote sensing.
