The Sea Ice System Services Framework: development and application / Amy Lauren Lovecraft, Hajo Eicken.

Title: The Sea Ice System Services Framework: development and application / Amy Lauren Lovecraft, Hajo Eicken.
Author(s): Lovecraft, Amy Lauren.
Eicken, Hajo.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Fairbanks, AK: University of Alaska
In: Field techniques for sea ice research. (2009.),
Abstract: Outlines systems approach to sea ice studies and problems posed by diminishing and potentially more variable sea ice coverage, particularly in Circumpolar North. Introduces broad conceptualisation of sea ice, as geophysical variable around which many formal and informal institutions (rule sets) exist, and proposes sea-ice system services (SISS) framework, intended to encourage linkages across human management of ecosystem services. Describes concept of socio-ecological system (SES), representing feedbacks between human actions and changes in natural system, discusses sea ice as example of SES, and describes concept of ecosystem services. Discusses policy analysis and problem definition, and applies SES and SISS concepts to study of sea ice. Discusses "globalized", "adaptive", "fortress" and "equitable" Arctic future scenarios.
