The role of remote sensing in worldwide glacier monitoring / Andreas Kääb.
Title: | The role of remote sensing in worldwide glacier monitoring / Andreas Kääb. |
Author(s): | Kääb, Andreas. |
Date: | 2010. |
Publisher: | London: Taylor & Francis |
In: | Remote sensing of glaciers : techniques for topographic, spatial and thematic mapping of glaciers. (2010.), |
Abstract: | Outlines goals supported by worldwide climate-related glacier monitoring: long-term monitoring as base for understanding processes related to glacier-climate interaction; detection of climate and environmental change expressed through glaciers and their changes; validation of climate models, impact models, sensitivity studies, scenarios, interpolations and extrapolations in space and time, etc.; and assessment of impacts of glacier changes (e.g. on sea level, water resources and runoff, natural hazards, landscape, tourism, glacier-permafrost, and sediment budget). Other goals include understanding of glacial processes, water resources management, hazard assessment and monitoring, and supporting engineering/construction. Describes role of remote sensing in Global Hierarchical Observing STrategy (GHOST), and Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) and other projects supporting large-scale glacier mapping from space. |
