Accuracy aspects in topographical change detection of glacier surface / Olli Jokinen, Thomas Geist.

Title: Accuracy aspects in topographical change detection of glacier surface / Olli Jokinen, Thomas Geist.
Author(s): Jokinen, Olli.
Geist, Thomas.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: London: Taylor & Francis
In: Remote sensing of glaciers : techniques for topographic, spatial and thematic mapping of glaciers. (2010.),
Abstract: Reviews topographical change detection on glaciers and presents methods for estimating accuracy of changes in elevation and volume between two surfaces. Introduces novel bound for truncation error when volume integral domain is set of triangles, and provides bounds for interpolation errors. Estimates precision of change in elevation and volume by error propagation from noise level in elevations and estimated uncertainty in DEM registration (following correction by surface matching). Explores methods with DEMs of Svartisheibreen, Norway (aerial photography and laser scanner DEMs) and Hintereisferner, Austria (sequence of ten laser scanner DEMs). Concludes that error bounds allowed reliable detection of even short-term changes over one month when using DEMs generated from airborne laser scanning and aerial photographs.
