Record #202890:

Ground-penetrating radar in glaciological applications / Francisco Navarro, Olaf Eisen.

Title: Ground-penetrating radar in glaciological applications / Francisco Navarro, Olaf Eisen.
Author(s): Navarro, Francisco.
Eisen, Olaf.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: London: Taylor & Francis
In: Remote sensing of glaciers : techniques for topographic, spatial and thematic mapping of glaciers. (2010.),
Abstract: Presents fundamentals of radio-wave propagation in ice and describes main radar systems used in glaciology. Discusses detection and resolution, fieldwork, main steps of data processing, and determination of ice volume and bed topography from radar-measured ice thickness, paying attention to error estimation. Divides applications focused on internal properties of snow/firn/ice body, such as internal layering, density, water content, hydrology, crevasses, and englacial channels, from those focusing on ice-bed interface, and draws examples from Livingston Island, Antarctica, and Hansbreen, Svalbard. Describes estimation of ice volume and bed topography from ice thickness data, and construction of associated maps. Discusses errors arising from vertical resolution of radar data, radar wave velocity, migration, and surface interpolation.
