Record #202889:

Airborne laser scanning in glacier studies / Thomas Geist, Johann Stötter.

Title: Airborne laser scanning in glacier studies / Thomas Geist, Johann Stötter.
Author(s): Geist, Thomas.
Stötter, Johann.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: London: Taylor & Francis
In: Remote sensing of glaciers : techniques for topographic, spatial and thematic mapping of glaciers. (2010.),
Abstract: Describes laser scanning principles and typical airborne systems. Reviews use in glaciology, particularly on Greenland Ice Sheet, and airborne laser scanner data sets obtained in OMEGA project (14 campaigns over period 2001-03; ten in Austria, covering Hintereisferner, Kesselwandferner and neighbouring areas, four in Norway, covering Engabreen and its forefield (also single data sets for Vernagtferner, Austria and Svartisheibreen, Norway)). Discusses applications to: surface elevation change, glacier velocity, surface roughness as input for energy balance modelling, glacier surface classification, automatic glacier delineation, and crevasse detection. Discusses method's advantages, such as applicability as active remote sensing technique to both snow and ice surfaces, accuracy over entire glacier area sufficient for investigating short-term geometry changes, rapid DEM generation, etc.
