| Abstract: | Discusses theory and principles behind synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and interferometric SAR (InSAR), using cross-track InSAR for DEM generation and motion estimation as examples, and discussing error contributions and phase noise estimation. Describes SAR image formation and SAR interferometry, and basics of C-band (5.6 GHz) snow and ice backscatter. Discusses possibilities and limitations of SAR for glacier movement estimation (using InSAR, feature tracking, and speckle/coherence tracking), DEM generation, and glacial facies imaging. Draws examples from Konsvegen and Kronebreen, Svalbard, and Engabreen, Norway. Discusses potential of polarimetric SAR to study physical properties of ice sheet, potentially separating volume and surface scattering contributions. |
