Record #202883:
The early history of remote sensing of glaciers / Christoph Mayer.
Title: | The early history of remote sensing of glaciers / Christoph Mayer. |
Author(s): | Mayer, Christoph. |
Date: | 2010. |
Publisher: | London: Taylor & Francis |
In: | Remote sensing of glaciers : techniques for topographic, spatial and thematic mapping of glaciers. (2010.), |
Abstract: | Divides into pre- and post-1957/58 International Geophysical Year, separating use of remote sensing almost exclusively for mapping and glacier velocity determination from development of new sensors and space technology that opened up entire EM spectrum for detecting wide variety of parameters. Discusses: early glacier observations from mid-17th century; advent of scientific approaches, including surface velocity observation and glacier mapping from point observations; development of photogrammetry in late 19th century, particularly by Finsterwalder; golden age of terrestrial glacier mapping, with stereographic analysis and photogrammetric velocity determination; and development of aerial photogrammetry, including solutions for image pairs of unknown locations and orientations, advances during WWII (in sea-ice reconnaissance, e.g.), mapping of remote glaciers, and discovery of radar penetration through glacial ice. |
Notes: | In: Remote sensing of glaciers : techniques for topographic, spatial and thematic mapping of glaciers / Petri Pellikka, W. Gareth Rees, eds. |
