Record #202882:

Glacier parameters monitored using remote sensing / Petri Pellikka, W. Gareth Rees.

Title: Glacier parameters monitored using remote sensing / Petri Pellikka, W. Gareth Rees.
Author(s): Pellikka, Petri.
Rees, W. Gareth.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: London: Taylor & Francis
In: Remote sensing of glaciers : techniques for topographic, spatial and thematic mapping of glaciers. (2010.),
Abstract: Summarises presence of glaciers in world, before discussing parameters typically monitored using remote sensing, either directly (surface reflectance, e.g.) or indirectly (e.g., glacier boundaries obtained from reflectivity contrast with surroundings). Covers: reflectance and albedo; surface temperature and surface melting; glacier zones and mass balance; glacier area and topography; bed topography and glacier volume; and glacier velocity. Considers current ability to delineate 2-D glacier geometry satisfactory, except when mapping at a particular point in balance year (to delineate facies for mass balance studies, e.g.). Views airborne laser profiling a promising technology for measuring surface topography, surface velocity and mass balance, and, in combination with ground-penetrating radar, glacier volume.
