Mýrdalsjökull's forefields under the microscope. The micromorphology of meltout and subglacial tills / Jaap J.M. van der Meer, Simon J. Carr, Kurt H. Kjaer.

Title: Mýrdalsjökull's forefields under the microscope. The micromorphology of meltout and subglacial tills / Jaap J.M. van der Meer, Simon J. Carr, Kurt H. Kjaer.

Publisher: London: Elsevier
In: Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, Iceland : glacial processes, sediments and landforms on an active volcano. (2010.),
Abstract: Analyses modern and sub-recent sediments from forefields of Mýrdalsjökull outlet glaciers in order to define key microscopic criteria for differentiating tills of different origins. Aims to link micromorphological observations to processes observed or inferred on basis of proximity to ice. Describes micromorphological methods and sample sites (Kötlujökull, Sléttjökull, and Sólheimajökull). Discusses sample grain size and shape, porosity, bedding, deformation, aggregates and coatings, plasmic fabric, and differentiation, and discusses thickness of deforming bed. Finds all glacial deposits from Mýrdalsjökull highly porous, with meltout deposits characterised by difficult-to-destroy coatings. Subglacial tills have all been deformed as part of deforming bed.
