Variations of Mýrdalsjökull during Postglacial and historical times / Oddur Sigurdsson.

Title: Variations of Mýrdalsjökull during Postglacial and historical times / Oddur Sigurdsson.
Author(s): Sigurdsson, Oddur.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: London: Elsevier
In: Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, Iceland : glacial processes, sediments and landforms on an active volcano. (2010.),
Abstract: Maps current names for outlet glaciers and areas on Mýrdalsjökull. Discusses glacier mass changes for surge- and non-surge-type outlet glaciers, with non-climatic causes including volcanic and geothermal activity, debris on glacier surface, and iceberg calving. Notes that 1721 and 1755 Katla eruptions may have melted more than 5% of ice cap mass. Reviews postglacial oscillations, jökulhlaup debris ("jökull"), tephra horizons and ice mass turnover. Ice cap may have disappeared during warmest periods 7800-5600 yr BP, and was considerably smaller than today during settlement period around AD 900 (except for Sólheimajökull and possibly Kötlujökull). Little Ice Age volume was maximal around 1890, followed by 20th-century retreat (except 1970-1995) and rapid 21st-century mass loss.
