Deglaciation and Holocene glacial history of Iceland / Ólafur Ongólfsson, Hregvidur Norddahl, Anders Schomacker.
Title: | Deglaciation and Holocene glacial history of Iceland / Ólafur Ongólfsson, Hregvidur Norddahl, Anders Schomacker. |
Author(s): | Ongólfsson, Ólafur. Norddahl, Hregvidur. Schomacker, Anders. |
Date: | 2010. |
Publisher: | London: Elsevier |
In: | Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, Iceland : glacial processes, sediments and landforms on an active volcano. (2010.), |
Abstract: | Reviews deglaciation and environmental history of Iceland since Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), with focus on glacial history of Mýrdalsjökull area. Summarises radiocarbon date correction and calibration and chronostratigraphical terminology, and lists most important ¹⁴C datings. Discusses: Icelandic Ice Sheet at LGM; Bølling deglaciation and relative sea level; Allerød environmental developments; Younger Dryas glacial and climatic event; early Preboreal glaciations; deglaciation of central south Iceland; relative sea level changes; Holocene glacier history; and pre-Little Ice Age (LIA) and LIA glacial histories of Mýrdalsjökull area. Concludes that Mýrdalsjökull massif has carried ice cover throughout Holocene, possibly restricted to Katla caldera rim at some stage, and reaching LIA maximum extent around AD 1900. |
