Record #202871:

Katla: tephrochronology and eruption history / Gudrún Larsen.

Title: Katla: tephrochronology and eruption history / Gudrún Larsen.
Author(s): Larsen, Gudrún.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: London: Elsevier
In: Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, Iceland : glacial processes, sediments and landforms on an active volcano. (2010.),
Abstract: Reviews Holocene activity of Katla volcanic system (KVS) and environmental changes resulting from associated tephra fall, lava emission, and jökulhlaup activity. Eruption history is characterised by hydromagamatic basaltic eruptions below Mýrdalsjökull, probably mostly within Katla caldera. Probably more than 300 explosive basaltic eruptions have broken through overlying ice. Some eruptions may never have become subaerial; most are accompanied by jökulhlaups from below Mýrdalsjökull. Maps reported tephra falls following 1918 Katla eruption, main flood routes of Katla jökulhlaups since AD 1600, main directions of tephra dispersal in historical eruptions, tephra layer isopachs for several eruptions, etc. Identifies three categories of Holocene volcanism and discusses associated jökulhlaup activity and environmental changes, particularly following Eldgjá eruption.
