| Abstract: | Reviews geology, seismicity and crustal deformation associated with Katla and Eyjafjallajökull volcanoes, up to year 2008. Describes tectonic setting, structure and eruptive products, recent unrest in both volcanoes since 1900 AD, earthquakes (including records of cumulative seismic moment, displacement time series, observed horizontal and vertical displacements, etc.); and crustal deformation from tilt, GPS and interferometric SAR observations. Interprets crustal deformation observed as results of ice cap thinning and magma accumulation, and discusses links between Godabunga seismicity and groundwater pressure during summer ice cap melt and intruding cryptodome. Suggests that Katla volcano is close to failure. |
