| Abstract: | Discusses surface-snow and full-depth avalanches, collapse of block-like snowpack, and cracks on surface of snowpack over wide areas where seismic intensity was 6 or more. Describes stepped and irregular failure surface of snow avalanches, which filled road at many locations, and in some cases despite presence of avalanche-supporting structure. Earthquake-induced avalanches of snow mixed with rock and sand flew long distances due to high fluidity. Avalanche risk assessment based on snow and weather conditions at time was low. Calculates stability index of snowpack using equation incorporating earthquake acceleration, and estimates index of sliding surface for surface-snow avalanche consisting of wet melt from snow to be 1.5 or less, supporting possibility of earthquake-induced avalanche. |
