Abstract: Investigates variations through winter 2004/05 in volumetric snow-water content and snow type on four different ground surfaces: sand, lawn, Akita cedar woods, and open grassland. Finds that during melt period, snow-water content of granular snow layer adjoining sand surface did not increase, and that total water equivalent of snow on sand surface was smaller than that on neighbouring lawn, although snow depth was same in both cases. Attributes characteristics to differences in wet density depending on vertical distribution of snow-water content and snow type. Also examines water permeability and water retention of four different surface soils. Finds saturated hydraulic conductivity and water retention of sand surface respectively larger and smaller than those of lawn. Discusses influence of surface soils on water content and type of snow cover.
