| Abstract: | Investigates snow-depth data from various sources on Web to characterise snow observation networks in Japan. Finds real time data from 2,197 stations available on Web, at density around one per 9 km² in regions facing Sea of Japan, and rather higher in temperate, light-snowfall region than in cold region. Presents maps of snow-depth distribution for period of heavy snowfall from December 2010 to March 2011, and discusses their effectiveness for evaluating spatial distribution of snow depth and snow/ice disaster risk. Identifies need to integrate data from multiple sources into single database and make data accessible to employees in single view. |
