Death toll in Tohoku district was 51 (of 131 for Japan as whole), mostly in Akita and Yamagata prefectures during period 10 January to 10 February, taking place during snow/ice removal operations, and more than half involving persons aged over 65. In winter 2005/06 151 died in Japan in similar circumstances. Damage in Tohoku district to occupied residences was less, and to vacant/unoccupied houses greater, than in 2005/06, and occurred later than did human casualties. Concludes that criteria for warning of hazards related to roof snow in Yamagata prefecture were effective, but should be applied from December to February.
