| Abstract: | Reports precipitation above-average for winter 2008-09, and summer 2009 temperatures well above average. Hofsjökull mass balance was negative for 14th successive year. Forty-five glacier variation sites were checked. Of glaciers whose terminus positions were assessed, thirty-one retreated, four advanced, and one was stationary. Includes glacier area, winter, summer and net mass balances, and ELA for three parts of Hofsjökull (Sátujökull, Thjórsárjökull and Blágnípujökull) over period 1987-2009. Includes photograph documenting unexplained presence of heaps of ice rubble floating on lagoon in front of Morsárjökull on 22 October 2009. |
