Record #202843:

LiDAR mapping of the Snaefellsjökull ice cap, western Iceland / Tómas Jóhannesson, and 4 others.

Title: LiDAR mapping of the Snaefellsjökull ice cap, western Iceland / Tómas Jóhannesson, and 4 others.
Author(s): Jóhannesson, Tómas.
Date: 2011.
In: Jökull. (2011.), Vol. 61 (2011)
Abstract: Presents mapping of ice cap surface based on 2008 airborne LiDAR survey. Compares with 1999 DTM derived from aerial photogrammetry to show 14.0 m average lowering over nine years. Compares estimates of ice cap area from 1910 onward, noting reduction from 12.5 km² in 2002 to 10.0 km² in 2008. Uses meteorological observation at Stykkishólmur, ~60 km east of ice cap to estimate mass balance sensitivity of -1.9 mw.ea⁻¹°C⁻¹. Since average current ice thickness is only 30 m, ice cap is likely to disappear within decades if recent warm Icelandic climate persists. Describes use of LiDAR DTM for automated delineation of crevasses, based on calculation of local curvature of ice surface.
