Record #202841:
Land-based marginal ice cliffs: focus on Kilimanajaro / Michael Winkler, and 5 others.
Title: | Land-based marginal ice cliffs: focus on Kilimanajaro / Michael Winkler, and 5 others. |
Author(s): | Winkler, Michael. |
Date: | 2010. |
In: | Erdkunde. (2010.), Vol. 64(2) (2010) |
Abstract: | Investigates marginal ice cliffs on Kibo as case of non-calving or rarely-calving land-based ice cliffs. Reviews understanding of cliff-face mass and energy balances and orientation. Presents photogrammetric survey of 26 m-high, 69°, and approximately south-facing cliff, and resulting digital surface model. Combines modelling of solar irradiance with on-site measurements to reveal direct insolation as main cause of: 1) predominant zonal alignment of ice cliffs (steep north- and south-facing slopes receive little direct solar energy), and 2) bimodal annual recession (annual path of sun induces either strong direct insolation on ice cliffs from sunrise to sunset or low/no direct insolation). Reports recession rates of ~13 and 1.4 cm/month for sunlit and shaded (early March to mid-October) periods. |
