Parameterization of glacier inventory data from Jotunheimen/Norway in comparison to the European Alps and the Southern Alps of New Zealand / Sabine Baumann, Stefan Winkler.

Title: Parameterization of glacier inventory data from Jotunheimen/Norway in comparison to the European Alps and the Southern Alps of New Zealand / Sabine Baumann, Stefan Winkler.
Author(s): Baumann, Sabine.
Winkler, Stefan.
Date: 2010.
In: Erdkunde. (2010.), Vol. 64(2) (2010)
Abstract: With view to analysing glacier development, behaviour and response to climate change, particularly in context of hydropower production, applies parameterisation due to Haerberli and Hoelzle to inventory data of Jotunheimen, Southern Norway, for three distinct time steps: "Little Ice Age" (LIA) maximum, 1980s, and 2003. Input comprises measured/mapped values of surface area, flowline length, and minimum/maximum altitudes. Summarises parameterisation scheme and evaluates results using direct mass balance data from Storbreen, Hellstugbreen, and Gråsubreen. Compares results with existing parameterisations for European Alps and Southern Alps of New Zealand, for period from LIA maximum to 1970s/80s. Area/volume losses were: New Zealand, 49%/61%; European Alps, 35%/48%; and Jotunheimen 27%/42%. Identifies Jotunheimen as most continental region.
