The contemporary retreat of Tasman Glacier, Southern Alps, New Zealand, and the evolution of Tasman Proglacial Lake / Robert C. Dykes, Martin S. Brook, Stefan Winkler.

Title: The contemporary retreat of Tasman Glacier, Southern Alps, New Zealand, and the evolution of Tasman Proglacial Lake / Robert C. Dykes, Martin S. Brook, Stefan Winkler.
Author(s): Dykes, Robert C.
Brook, Martin S.
Winkler, Stefan.
Date: 2010.
In: Erdkunde. (2010.), Vol. 64(2) (2010)
Abstract: Quantifies accelerating retreat of Tasman Glacier over period 2000-08, using sequential satellite imagery and bathymetric mapping of Tasman Lake conducted in April 2008. Retreat was relatively slow prior to 2006 and rapid from 2006-2008, with respective terminus full-width retreat rates of 54 and 144 m a⁻¹. Identifies process controlling ice loss at terminus during first period as iceberg calving resulting from thermal undercutting, with post-2006 retreat probably controlled by buoyancy-driven calving as supraglacial pond growth reduced overburden pressure. Constructs 1957-2008 time series of Tasman Lake surface area and volume. Area increased by 86% from 2000-2008, and volume by 284% from 1995-2008. Expects these to increase dramatically as lake expands into deeper water.
