Record #202836:

Climate and glacier fluctuations in the Bavarian Alps in the last 120 years / Wilfried Hagg, and 3 others.

Title: Climate and glacier fluctuations in the Bavarian Alps in the last 120 years / Wilfried Hagg, and 3 others.
Author(s): Hagg, Wilfried.
Date: 2010.
In: Erdkunde. (2010.), Vol. 66(2) (2010)
Abstract: Extends geodetic mass balance records for five small glaciers (Nördlicher and Südlicher Schneeferner, Höllentalferner, Blaueis, and Watzmanngletscher), by analysing historical maps and 2009-2010 surface survey. Also analyses temperature and precipitation series from closest meteorological stations and correlations with mass balance. All glaciers experienced severe mass loss following positive balances of 1960s and 1970s. Records show extensive summer warming, but no increase over altitudinal gradient. Winter precipitation varies little on decadal time scale, with no significant trend. Attributes mass losses mainly to increased summer temperatures, cautioning that mean seasonal values exclude fluctuations of temporary snow line, which are crucial for small glacier mass balance and treatable only with daily time-step model. Maps changing glacier extents since late 19th century.
