Abstract: Reports measurements of surface albedo of different kinds of sea ice in Pacific region of Arctic Ocean made with ASD spectrometer during period July 27 to August 23, 2010, over geographical range 72°18′-87°20′ N and 152°34′-178°22′ W. Results indicate a mean total albedo for sea ice covered with dry snow of 0.2, highest reported. Albedo decreased somewhat during ice melting. Reports presence of many melt ponds during Arctic summer, and classifies ponded ice into three types by colour. Albedo of white ice was high (0.54), of blue ice lower (0.31), and of grey ice far lower (0.20). Albedo for melting ponds was 0.16 (calculated). Concludes that melting ponds are main cause of albedo variations during summer.
