Abstract: Proposes method for reconstructing runoff, involving: 1) weather observations to assess dependence of runoff on climate index (normalised annual precipitation and air temperature anomalies, together with water vapour pressure and total June-September cloud); 2) site selection representative of local relationship between climate index and tree ring width W; 3) multivariate linear regression relating runoff to W; 4) introduction of new variables (indexes PDSI/SPEI and ring density) to adequately assess annual flow of Naryn in 1901-2006. Describes runoff reconstruction for 1700-2005. Uses 32 tree ring width and density chronologies to reconstruct average summer air temperatures at Pamir and Tien Shan meteorological stations over periods ranging from 100 to 278 years. Discusses correlations, errors, etc.
