Title, transliterated: Ėkstremalʹnye zimy XX-XXI vv. kak indikatory snezhnosti i lavinnoĭ opasnosti v uslovii︠a︡kh proshlogo i prognoziruemogo izmeneniĭ klimata / A.D. Oleĭnikov, N.A. Volodicheva.
Translated title: Extreme winters in 20th-21st centuries as indicators of snowiness and avalanche hazard in the past and expected climate change conditions.
Author(s): Oleĭnikov, A. D.
Volodicheva, N. A.
Date: 2012.
Language: Russian.
In: Led i Sneg. (2012.), Vol. 3(119) (2012)
Abstract: Discusses social and economic effects of large-scale winter meteorological anomalies, and how climate system maintains certain momentum during periods of adjustment and transition to other conditions in ratio of heat and moisture, and contains "signal" of climates past and future. Identifies extremely cold winters in observation data from Krasnaya Polyana (1936-2010), Kluchorskiy Pass (1955-2010) and Terskol (1961-1996), and assesses snowiness and avalanche activity for Elbrus region (model site for avalanche regime in Central Caucasus). Aims to identify extreme winters in Greater Caucasus, assess their frequency, and characterise scale and intensity of avalanche formation. Data obtained can be used to identify winter-analogues in reconstruction and long-term forecasting of avalanches.
