Abstract: Presents microbiological study of ice of Amur and Songhua rivers following accident in petro-chemical plant in China. Demonstrates existence in river ice of viable microorganisms with high potential activity to decompose various organic substances, including phenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Discusses cryomicrobiocenoses as bioindicators of water ecosystem pollution during freeze-up, and possibility of predicting character of secondary water pollution with products of hydrocarbon transformation during spring thawing by cryomicrobiocenoses activity.
