Record #202238:

Females roam while males patrol: divergence in breeding season movements of pack-ice polar bears (Ursus maritimus) / Kristin L. Laidre, and 5 others.

Title: Females roam while males patrol: divergence in breeding season movements of pack-ice polar bears (Ursus maritimus) / Kristin L. Laidre, and 5 others.
Author(s): Laidre, Kristin L.
Date: 2012.
Publisher: [London]: Royal Society
Abstract: Reports movement data collected from 23 adult male polar bears (Ursus maritimus) with ear-tagged transmitters in two separate pack-ice subpopulations over five breeding seasons. Compares movements with those of 26 concurrently tagged adult females and analyses velocities, movement tortuosity, range sizes and habitat selection with respect to sex, reproductive status and body mass. Concludes that dynamic of polar bear pair formation is ultimately controlled by movement behaviour, population densities, and biological and physical constraints in dynamic Arctic environment.
