| Abstract: | Examines reindeer herding productivity from ineffective Soviet collectivised position in 1950 to state of crisis in first half of 1970s. States that level of social and economic welfare of indigenous population is determined by reindeer-based economy. Assesses problems including ineffective sovkhoz and kolkhoz farming, mechanisation of herding, dangerous weather conditions. Notes that even with immense state support, very different methods of reindeer herding have proved completely ineffective. |
