Examines specific characteristics of Chukchi skin and fur garment-manufacture based on research with both coastal and reindeer people. Discusses social factors and symbolic meanings associated with clothing. Considers role of girls as main apprentices and elderly women as masters of stitching and guardians of sewing traditions. Emphasises importance of teaching traditional practices, terminology and techniques to contemporary society. |
