Quartz weathering in freeze-thaw cycles: experiment and application to the El'gygytgyn crater lake record for tracing Siberian permafrost history / Georg Schwamborn, and 3 others.
Title: | Quartz weathering in freeze-thaw cycles: experiment and application to the El'gygytgyn crater lake record for tracing Siberian permafrost history / Georg Schwamborn, and 3 others. |
Author(s): | Schwamborn, Georg. |
Date: | 2012. |
In: | Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2012.), Vol. 94(4) (2012) |
Abstract: | Examines assumption that cryogenic weathering preferentially breaks up quartz grains by applying results of laboratory tests to Quaternary records from lake sediment core of El'gygytgyn crater, northeast Russia. Traces combination of silt production, relative quartz enrichment in silt fraction, and quartz grain micromorphology in multi-100-kyr lake sediment archive as indicator data for cryogenic weathering. Infers constant cryogenic weathering conditions for at least last 220,000 years. |
