Force budget analysis of glacier flow: ice dynamical studies on Storglaciären, Sweden, and ice flow investigations of outlet glaciers in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica / Jim Hedfors.

Title: Force budget analysis of glacier flow: ice dynamical studies on Storglaciären, Sweden, and ice flow investigations of outlet glaciers in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica / Jim Hedfors.
Author(s): Hedfors, Jim.
Date: 2004.
Publisher: Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis
Abstract: Describes collection, processing, and analysis of geophysical and remotely-sensed data of glacier movement and geometry, and use of an improved modelling technique to establish spatial and temporal patterns of ice dynamics to estimate ice mass fluxes in polar regions. Geophysical data was collected from four glacial systems: Storglaciären in Sweden, and Bonnevie-Svendsenbreen, Kibergbreen and Plogbreen in Antarctica, using combinations of in situ DGPS and GPR techniques together with remotely-sensed data from mainly SPOT panchromatic and RADARSAT SAR imagery. A methodology of combining force balance calculations with calculations of thermodynamic properties of ice was incorporated in a model to calculate ice flow via inversion of flow law for ice. Method estimates outflux component through glacier cross-section, and evaluates variations in outflux with temporal changes and in relation to influx in terms of mass balance to provide signals for climate change. Requires ice surface velocities and ice geometry together with climate parameters such as temperature and snow accumulation rates. Methodology is tested on sub-Arctic control glacier prior to case studies in Antarctica.
