Histoire de la glaciologie / Frédérique Remy ; préfaces de Isabelle Autissier and Erik Orsenna.

Title: Histoire de la glaciologie / Frédérique Remy ; préfaces de Isabelle Autissier and Erik Orsenna.
Author(s): Remy, Frédérique.
Autissier, Isabelle,
Orsenna, Erik,
Date: 2007.
Publisher: Paris: Vuibert
Language: French.
Abstract: Tells history of glaciology, from Greeks convinced of Earth's roundness by presence of ice at its poles, to International Polar Year 2007/08. Introduces glaciers as reservoirs containing records climatological, archaeological and palaeontological, and snow and ice as scientific muses. Locates origins of glaciology in work of Kepler on snow and Descartes on ice, and identifies Horace Bénédict de Saussure as first true glaciologist. Emphasises ranges of spatial and temporal scales of interest to glaciology, and significance for understanding of Earth's past, present and future climate. Covers, e.g.: "glaciology" in Antiquity; 17th-century astronomer glaciology; appearance of thermodynamics; discovery of ice ages; 19th/20th-century polar expeditions; and current research and rapidly changing glaciers. Asides include many biographies and scientific explanations.
