Abstract: | Disucsses role of Canadian North-West Mounted Police in extreme north-west of Canada in 20th century. Duties included establishment of national presence through enforcement of Canadian law, protection of country's commercial interests, extension of state services to region, and transformation of hunters into citizens. Notes that, in 1910, Herschel Island was made sub-district headquarters for police in western Arctic and became base for regular patrols along North Slope to Mackenzie Delta and south to Porcupine river and Old Crow. |
