Covers history of settlement, population statistics, ethnic composition, language, education, employment. Differentiates between non-ethnic mechanisms of adaptation such as waged employment plus ancillary work and ethnic mechanisms based on additional legally prescribed ethnic rights. Identifies traditional work in reindeer and fishing industries and self-sufficiency as markers of identity. Emphasises importance of Assotsiyatsiya Korennykh Malochislennykh Narodov Severa (RAIPON) for indigenous people of Magadan. Notes creation of new forms of social organisation, private enterprise, innovation and self-help arising from ethnic self-realisation as way forward to transform yet preserve of traditional way of life. |
