Discusses Aleut dialects, history of study of Aleut, socio-linguistic situation in past and present, terms of self-reference, lexical influence, and comparative analysis with other Eskimo languages. Reflects on reasons for language stability not taken into account by linguists, including symbolic function and language as ethnic marker of identity.
