Behavior of belugas in the presence of whale-watching vessels in Churchill, Manitoba and recommendations for local beluga-watching activities / Christopher D. Malcolm, Heather C. Penner.

Title: Behavior of belugas in the presence of whale-watching vessels in Churchill, Manitoba and recommendations for local beluga-watching activities / Christopher D. Malcolm, Heather C. Penner.
Author(s): Malcolm, Christopher D.
Penner, Heather C.
Date: 2011.
Publisher: Putnam Valley, NY: Cognizant Communications
In: Polar tourism : human, environmental and governance dimensions. (2011.),
Abstract: While officially prohibited, disturbance to marine mammals is difficult to monitor due to complexity of interpretation of disturbance and popularity of activity which brings in tourist revenue. Research into whale watching in Churchill, where high numbers of belugas are concentrated in restricted area, shows variable beluga reactions to marine vessels, with inexperienced tourists demonstrating disturbing behaviour. Considerations for operational and industrial management of whale watching in Churchill area are presented, together with suggestions for further research.
