Abstract: Examines comprehension of death among Shortsy (Shory) and Northern Altaytsy during period of active Christianisation in 19th century. Analyses signs and precursors of idea of death. Provides breakdown into three parts: signs of possibility of death; signs (evidence) of death; reasons for death. Concludes with idea of ochag (hearth) as portal between two worlds as reference point of interaction between indigenous and Orthodox religions.
