Abstract: | Despite Canadian government's official support for United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, perception among Indians, Inuit and Métis is that policy towards them has not changed, view reinforced by 2011 Attawapiskat emergency facing Ontario Cree community. Federal government funding of child welfare services discriminates against aboriginal children, land rights are violated and legal obligations ignored in face of commercial and industrial development. Loss of indigenous languages is critical issue and, in effort to maintain its language and culture, Squamish nation has produced first Squamish-English dictionary (2011). |
