Abstract: Examination of relationship between issues of national identity, scientific progress, modernity and masculinity raised in author's 1993 book Gender on ice : American ideologies of polar exeditions, and film and photographic work of Isaac Julien and Connie Samaras. Both Julien's film True North and Samaras' photographic and video record V.A.L.I.S. challenge popular perceptions of polar regions and question validity of older heroic narratives of Arctic and Antarctic respectively, with specific reference to Robert Peary, Matthew Henson, and Robert Falcon Scott.
