Record #200852:

Late Weichselian and Holocene sedimentary environments and glacial activity in Billefjorden, Svalbard / Nicole J. Baeten, and 3 others.

Title: Late Weichselian and Holocene sedimentary environments and glacial activity in Billefjorden, Svalbard / Nicole J. Baeten, and 3 others.
Author(s): Baeten, Nicole J.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: London: Geological Society
In: Fjord systems and archives. (2010.),
Abstract: Reports use of swath bathymetry data and one sediment core to improve understanding of Late Weichselian and Holocene glacier activity in Billefjorden, Svalbard. Grounded glacier occupied Billefjorden before ca 11.23 cal ka BP. It deposited basal till and formed glacial lineations in central parts of fjord. Annual recessional moraines and radiocarbon dates indicate rapid (ca 170 m a⁻¹) retreat of glacier front from central to inner parts of Billefjorden between ca 11.23 and 11.2 cal ka BP. Sediment supply from Nordenskiöldbreen decreased gradually, whereas delivery from fjord sides increased. Nordenskiöldbreen existed as tidewater glacier throughout entire Holocene.
