Abstract: Describes adverse effect of negative temperatures on living organisms. Identifies three temperature ranges providing existence of stable cryosystems (0 to -20°C, -20 to -80°C, and below -80°C), each distinctly affecting life-activities of organisms. Discusses recent studies into ability of microorganisms to exist for long time under extreme environmental conditions (e.g. bacteria in Arctic permafrost)
