Abstract: Examines development of Terra Nova bay polynya using two-month sequence of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) ice surface temperature images (ISTs), complemented by set of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Fnds that MODIS ISTs with 1 km spatial resolution provide smaller estimates of polynya area than do space-borne passive microwave systems with maximum resolution of approximately 10 km.
