Abstract: Examines several ice cloud models consisting of smooth, roughened, homogeneous and inhomogeneous hexagonal ice crystals with various aspect ratios. Investigates sensitivity of bulk scattering properties and solar reflectances of cirrus clouds to specific ice cloud models using improved geometric optics method (IGOM) and discrete ordinates radiative transfer (DISORT) model. Develops new algorithm to determine appropriate model for satellite-based retreieval of ice cloud properties. Uses ice cloud particle size retrieved from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, collocated with Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) observations to infer optical thicknesses of ice clouds for nine viewing angles.
