Abstract: Critical review of travel journals, diaries and letters of Henry Kelsey (c. 1667-1724), in particular journal of his 1690-1692 expedition into Canadian prairies on behalf of Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Journal chiefly follows norms of HBC's in-house reporting, but unusually includes initial section in heroic couplets, in which Kelsey conveys his awarenesss of value of his writings and their potential to enhance his status. Kelsey later used his extensive knowledge of native languages and customs to compile a dictionary of Cree language (Dictionary of the Hudson's Bay Indian Language), first published in 1720.
