Abstract: Toponymic inventory of land use and occupancy by native groups in the Athabasca-Mackenzie region based on Emile Petitot's late nineteenth century linguistic classification. Problems of proving aboriginal rights of title and theoretical legal implications of basing these rights on place names are considered. Includes brief biography of Petitot.
