Abstract: Defines meteoric ice as ice derived from solid precipitation, in which deuterium excess (d in δD = 8 δ¹⁸O + d) has well-defined value. Contrasts this with non-meteoric ice, derived from water freezing, which has multiple other than 8 in above formula, and suggests differing significance of deuterium excess in non-meteoric ice. Reviews environmental significance of deuterium excess in both situations, illustrated firstly in Vostok and EPICA ice cores, and secondly in case studies of ice formed by water freezing in Suess Glacier and Beacon Valley, South Victoria Land. Permits reconstruction of palaeoenvironmental conditions.
