Record #200526:
Olfaction and brain size in the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) / J.G.M. Thewissen, and 3 others.
Title: | Olfaction and brain size in the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) / J.G.M. Thewissen, and 3 others. |
Author(s): | Thewissen, J. G. M. |
Date: | 2011. |
Publisher: | [San Francisco, CA]: Society for Marine Mammalogy |
Abstract: | Report of investigation into olfactory anatomy of bowhead whales, hitherto considered very rudimentary. Investigation found that, in bowhead whales, olfactory bulb is small but histologically complex, whereas in toothed whales it is absent altogether, leading to conclusion that bowheads may use sense of smell to assist search for food. |
